1.  Ueno Sakura Matsuri (March 18 – April 9th, 2017) – Ueno Park is wondeful to visit anytime of the year, but Cherry blossom season it comes alive with over 1,000 Ueno Sakura Matsurilanterns, 600 cherry trees and the antique market and special events planned over the Matsuri period.

2. Annual Special Access to the Garden of Denbou-in, Sensoji Temple in Asakusa (March 18-May 9, 2017) – Senso-ji in Asakusa Tokyo is on everybody’s must visit locations in Tokyo to see the pagoda, red gates with huge guards and shopping street. However, the hidden gem is the secret garden which is only open in the spring each year. As you enter to the garden you will pass some temple treasures which are fun to review. The garden has a large koi pond with some of the brightest colored koi in Japan. The cherry blossoms and tiny bell flowers in blue in April are dainty and picture perfect. The garden is huge at over 10,000 square meters and is designed to travel around to capture different views. Make sure to visit during April!

3. Kanamara Matsuri at Kawasaki (Sunday, April 2nd, 2017 ) – Aka the Penis Festival (sorry parents)

Kanamara Festival, Tokyo Family Events – A quick 25 minute train ride from Shinagawa Station (with one change) and you can experience on of the most unusually and interesting festivals in Japan. Kanamara Matsuri is translated as the “Festival of the Steel Phallus”, aka the penis festival. The Shrine the festival is held at is well known to pray for prosperity, easy childbirth, solid Kanamara Festival, Tokyo Family Eventsmarriages, and fertility. During the one day festival, you will see huge phallus statues carried around. Also, various carvings of these objects in vegetable and candy forms are available to purchase for immediate consumption or to take home. The Shrine donates a large amount of proceeds to various HIV and AIDs programs. Note: not advisable for small children or strollers. Tokyo Easter Family Fun Event4. Family Fun Easter Event (Saturday, April 15th, 2017) – Celebrate spring with the Easter bunny! The day before Easter your kids can enjoy a photo opportunity with the Easter bunny, make Easter crafts and enjoy some sweets at the Easter Family Fun Event. The event will also benefit Shine On! Kids which is a Japan-based cancer charity for children. Parents can make reservations for a one hour spot between 10:00 and 4:00. The event will be held at the Tengenji Embassy restaurant near Hiroo Station. The participation fee for participating Kids, of all ages, is 2,500 JPY, and parents are 1,000 JPY.

Ukiyo-e Exhibit ~From Cat to Dragon5. Animals in Ukiyo-e Exhibit ~From Cat to Dragon (April 1 – May 28, 2017) Animals in Ukiyo-e Exhibit ~From Cat to Dragon– Not all adults nor kids enjoy Ukiyo-e prints, however, who doesn’t like picture of cute animals. This exhibit provides a great opportunity to appreciate Japanese art. From pets such as cats and goldfish to personified octopuses and foxes to mystical dragons and kappa (water sprite). The exhibition “Animals in Ukiyo-e”, which introduced various animals depicted in ukiyo-e and enjoyed popularity in 2010, has come back with an even more powerful collection. Twice as many pieces, approximately 160 in total, will be exhibited.

6.Nezu Shrine Annual Azalea Festival (April 8 – May 5, 2017) – Nezu Shrine Azalea Festival from mid-April tillNezu Shrine Annual Azalea Festival the end of Golden Week (1st week of May) is a beautiful landscape of ancient Japanese temple buildings, bright orange gates and thousands and thousands of azalea bushes in every color possible. The Shrine’s azalea garden was reportedly planted 300 years ago and has over 3,000 azalea bushes with over 100 species. If you have a botanist or flower lover in your family, this will be a favourite annual destination. While you Nezu Shrine Annual Azalea Festivalare there purchase a sweet and warm bean cake and enjoy the complementary tea served under awnings as you watch the flowers and ducks on your tatami mat.

7. Japan Local Food Festival Kuohzei 2016, Hibiya Park (April 6 – 9, 2017)  – After walking around the Imperial Palace viewing
the cherry blossom or biking visit the Japan Local Food Festival in Hibiya Park. There will be food and beverages from Hokkaido to Okinawa to try. Great break to refuel.

 Yabusame 8. Day trip to Kamakura to experience Yabusame (Horseback archery) Sunday, April 16th (Kamakura, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Temple) – At 13:00 you can view Yabusame which is the art of mounted archery. Yabusame has existed in Japan since the 12th century, and supposedly originated in Kamakura.Grab yourself a spot along the course and watch the arrows fly. These mounted archers are quite amazing both for speed, agility and accuracy. The rider who hit three targets is awarded high donors at a beautiful ceremony at the end. Here is a good itinerary for a one day visit to Kamakura.

Earth Day Tokyo Spring 2017 (April 22 – 23rd, 2017) – Earth Day Tokyo is a fun family event.  Over 200 booths sell and display products and services that are eco and crafty. Very fun, and impossible to walk way empty-handed. Lots of good food and drink. There is also a good music line-up to keep you dancing and warm. Kids will definitely enjoy a few hours wandering the stalls with parents. Also, if you visit at night, the candle-lit stalls are very pretty to view. If the weather is nice, enjoy a good weekend walk to Yoyogi Park and enjoy the Earth Day Tokyo event this weekend.

Active Kids Festa10. Active Kids Festa, Ariake, Tokyo (April 22 – 23, 2017) – This two-day event is a lot of fun for kids 3-8 years of age. This video will give you a taste of the event! This years’s event will be the sixth annual Active Kids Festa, which is supported by many sports companies. You and your children can view and participation in many new sports and activities such as running bikes, skate boards, bungee, paddle boards, etc. All actives are outside near the Tokyo Big Site. There is also a mini bike race you can apply to enter via their Japanese website (applications full). If you have an active kid, April 2017 Tokyo Top 10 Activities and Eventsgive it a try.
