Samurai Museum, Shinjuku – Edutainment for All Ages

If you have a Samurai or history buff in your family, you will enjoy a visit to the boutique Samurai Museum in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The museum although quite small is filled with Samurai artifacts, a live action show on Samurai sword skills and casual photo shoot in costume. A visit will take about 90 minutes. The museum has a small entrance area with a gift shop and exhibit of armor on the 1st floor.
On the first floor, you will be divided into groups and assigned to a tour guide. After viewing the 1st-floor gallery of Samurai Armor, you will be escorted upstairs (not stroller or walkingSamurai Museum, Shinjuku - Tokyo Samurai History and Action impaired friendly). Arriving on the 2nd floor you will need to remove your shoes to walk into various tatami rooms with exhibits. There are five tatami rooms on the second floor which exhibit Japanese swords, Armor (you can try on the helmet and facemask for a photo op), helmets, and guns. Many of the artifacts are hundreds of years old. On the second floor, you will also be seated for a 20 min show by a “Samurai” on sword skills. My four-year-old four the actions and noise a bit scary at first but was laughing by the end. Before you leave, make sure to try on a kimono and helmet for your photo opportunity (included in admission
price).

Note: The guides seem to be young college students who have a wide range of English linguistic ability. They are all very fun and seem to enjoy their jobs, however, the better the English level, the more interesting the tour. Samurai Museum, Shinjuku - Tokyo Samurai History and ActionKid Reco: Great for kids 4+. My daughter (4) was a bit scared of the darker lighting and Samurai Museum, Shinjuku - Tokyo Samurai History and Actionloud yelling in the show. Not stroller friendly.
