View the Cherry Blossoms. If you miss the Cherry Blossom peak in Tokyo take a quick trip north to Nagano, Tohoku or Kanazawa over the next few weeks to catch cherry blossoms. 2. Visit Showa Memorial Park, Tachikawa, Tokyo  – late March through June for all types of flowers – Showa Memorial Park has more than 1,500 cherry trees, including 200 or so Somei Yoshina cherry trees, 220,000 tulips of 13 varieties, 1.8 million poppies, and dainty blue nemophila flowers blossom in the Spring. You can spend the entire day at the park so pack a lunch and all your sports equipment. Access: 2 min walk from Nishi Tachikawa Station, 14 min walk from Tachikawa station. I recommend you take eh Chuo Line from Shinjuku directly to Nishi Tachikawa station which is a good spot to get a rental bike. There is a also a large parking lot at the Nishi Tachikawa park side (near the station)

Tokyo Area April 2019 Recommended Activities & Events3Roppongi Hills Spring Festival 2019, Minato-ku, Tokyo (April 5 – 7th) –  Enjoy cherry blooms, rent a kimono, live performance, childrens` crafts, entertainment and food. The annual Roppongi Hills Spring festival is always family friendly!

The Tokyo American Clubs Women’s group is holding their annual Nearly New Sales (flea market) on Friday, April 5th. Also, the Women’s Group will be accepting donations of clean clothes and other good-quality household items to support the Salvation Army’s mission of helping families in need in the Tokyo area. Donated items will be sold at the Salvation Army Charity Bazaar. Kanamara Matsuri at Kawasaki,Tokyo Area April 2019 Recommended Activities & Events4. Kanamara Matsuri,  Kanagawa-ken (Sunday, April 7th)  – Aka the Penis Festival (sorry parents) – Kanamara Matsuri is translated as the “Festival of the Steel Phallus”, aka the penis festival. The Shrine the festival is held at is well known to pray for prosperity, easy childbirth, solid marriages, and fertility.

5. 61st annual Kamakura Festival, Kanagawa – ken. April 14 – 21st (Sunday is the best day to attend) – The entire town of Kamikura transforms into a Kamakura Buddhafestival area with parades and mikoshi to celebrate the the height of Kamakura power during the Medieval Period.  Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is a historic shrine and a symbol of Kamakura. The main attractions are the shizuka no mai dance performed in the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine on the second Sunday and yabusame on the third Sunday. You can also see Yabusame, the art of shooting arrows on horseback.  I highly recommend you take the train due to large crowds. This is a super fun festival to attend and visit Kamakura. Here is our one day itinerary for Kamakura.

Asakusa Kannon-ura Ichiyo Sakura-matsuri Festival6. Asakusa Kannon-ura Ichiyo Sakura-matsuri Festival (Edo Yoshiwara Oiran-dochu Procession) (Sat, April 13th) – If you want to experience a procession from the Edo period (1603–1868) with beautifully appointed geisha and servants this might be the best opportunity. Ichiyo Sakura Matsuri is one of the three great festivals of Asakusa shrine area and each year over 100,00 people gather to see the procession, shows and flea market; as well as the beautiful cherry blossoms that line the procession. While in the area check out Kappabashi (Kitchen town) and the Drum Museum!

Cherry blossom illumination – An illumination event for 200 meters of the cherry tree avenue as the sun sets. At nighttime, the cherry blossoms show a different face from day-time for you to enjoy. Pink lights are used before the buds open, and then white once they do.

Spring Flower Display – An indoor flower display as the first herald of spring. Experience the water, light, and breath of spring with all your five senses through works that perfectly balance fresh cherry blossoms foliage with artificial flower petals. The cherry petals will sway to the music of spring like notes on a musical stave.

Tokyo Area April 2019 Recommended Activities & Events8. Tokyo International School (Minami Azabu, Minato) – will be hosting their 2019 Cherry Blossom Fair on Saturday, April 20th from 11:00-16:00. This is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the Sakura season while experiencing cultures from around the world. There will be international cuisine, music, games, and entertainment, as well as a raffle. All are welcome, and admission is free. So please come and enjoy the festivities!

Azalea Festival Nezu Shrine10. Nezu Shrine Annual Azalea Festival, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo (Late-April to early May) – Nezu Shrine Azalea Festival from mid-April till the end of Golden Week (1st week of May) is a beautiful landscape of ancient Japanese temple buildings, bright orange gates and thousands and thousands of azalea bushes in every color possible.

Sagamihara koinobori11. Sagamihara Koinobori Festival, Kanagawa-ken (April 29 – May 5th) – The Sagamihara Koinobori Festival (泳げ鯉のぼり相模川) has been held over 30 years to celebrate Children’s Day on May 5th. Five huge wires are hooked over the river and 1,200 koi nobori are hung to swim in the sky. The swimming koi represent the strong and good health of their children. You can get to Sagamihara in about 1.5 hours driving from central Tokyo or 2 hours on train. Location of the koinobori are here (google map). While in the area you can also visit the Sagamigawa Fureai Science Museum Aquarium Sagamihara.

Nemophilia @ Hitachi Seaside Park 12. View Millions of Nemophila @ Hitachi Seaside Park  – late April to May – More than 4.5 million nemophila bloom on a 3.5 hectare hill in the park, creating a beautiful contrast with the blue sky. Address: 605-4, Mawatari Aza Oonuma, Hitachinaka-City (about a 2 hour drive or 3 hours by train) English Website: https://hitachikaihin.jp/en.html

Kameido Teinjin Shrine, Wisterial,Tokyo Area April 2019 Recommended Activities & Events13. Kameido Tenjin Shrine Wisteria Festival, Koto-ku, Tokyo (Late April to early May) – The Kameido Tenjin Shrine (亀戸天神社) is the number one spot in Tokyo to see magnificent cascades of hanging purple wisteria (fuji flowers). The flowers are in bloom from late April through the beginning of May at which time the shrine holds the annual Wisteria Festival.
