Tokyo Area 2017 Illuminations – Quick Reference Guide

Our kids love holiday lights as much as we do so we`re posting our favorite Tokyo Area 2017 Illuminations picks. Most have started this past week so head on out to get in an early holiday mood. We love biking around after dinner to get family photos.  Some of the illuminations stay up in the New Year so you can enjoy for months to come. The following are in alphabetical order.

Tokyo Area 2016 Illuminations1. Decks Tokyo Beach (Odaiba, Tokyo)  – now until December 25, 2017
The park and beach area in from of Decks is lit with over 220,000 lights. Bright colored lights to bring joy to all ages. A brilliant view from both the deck of the shopping center as well as from the bay if you are lucky to be on a boat shuttle.
Time of illumination: November 16  –  December 25, 2017; daily 17:00 – 24:00

2. Grand Hyatt Tokyo (Roppongi) – now until December 25th 
Visit the lobby of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Rooppongi to get great photo shots of your kids. This year’s theme is the Colors of Hope and is supporting kids charities.

3. Marunouchi Illuminations 2017 (Marunouchi, Tokyo)  now until  February 18, 2018
One of the longest illuminations which is trying very hard to be eco-friendly with low-energy bulbs. The lights are as beautiful as ever in their magnificent champagne color. Enjoy some high-end shopping after work or play.
Time of illumination: Everyday 17:30 – 23:00; December 1 – December 28 17:00 – 24:00

Mother Bokujo Illumnations4. Mothers Bokujo Farm (Chiba) – now until February 25, 2018
Combine a fun day at Mother Farm in Chiba to enjoy the open space, farm animals, and small amusement rides, with illuminations that begin at 16:00. Over 50,000 lights are twinkling to get you into the holiday spirit.  It is also dog-friendly so bring pooch along. The farm is located about a 60-90 min drive from central Tokyo via the Aqua Line. You can also take a train and then bus to the farm which takes about 90 mins.
Time of illuminations: October 21, 2017 – February 25, 2018; 16:00 – 20:00

5. Omotesando Dori (Omotesando, Tokyo) – December 1 – 25,  2017Tokyo Area 2016 Illuminations
One of my favorite illuminations is the light-up of over 100 zelkova trees between Jingumae and Omotesando crossing. Approximately 900,000 lights are used over 500m. The champagne and orange lights warm many hearts for the holiday season.
Time of illumination: December 1 – 25, 2017; sunset – 21:00

6. Omotesando Hills (Omotesando, Tokyo) – now until December 25, 2017
This indoor illumination is quite brilliant with over 300,000 lights. The 10m illuminated tree hung with Swarovski crystals is amazing. Definitely gets you in the holiday mood to buy presents. I would combine a late afternoon visit to Omotesando Hills to make sure you catch the illuminations outside from sunset.

Rainbow Bridge Illuminations7. Rainbow Bridge 2017 Illuminations (Minato-ku, T0kyo) – December 3, 2017 – January 3, 2018
The Rainbow Bridge will be adorned with rainbow colors for this holiday season. Makes driving over the bridge to Odaiba even more fun!

Tokyo Area 2016 Illuminations8. Roppongi Hills (Roppongi, Tokyo)  – now until  December 25, 2017
Walking or driving through Roppongi Hills is always very magical with all the beautiful blue and white lights. This year some heat is added with the lights changing to orange every 20 mins or so. There will also be a 7m tree with flickering lights located at the entrance of “66 Plaza”.

Sagamiko illuminations9. Sagamiko Resort Pleasure Forest (Sagamiko, Kanagawa-ken)  – now until  April 8, 2018
If you want to see the largest illumination show in the Kanto area head to the Sagamiko Resort in Kanagawa-ken. There will be over 6 million lights making this one of the biggest illuminations in the Kanto Area. Enjoy the day at Sagamiko Resort ending with the illuminations.

Hikarie illumination10. Shibuya Hikarie (Shibuya, Tokyo) – now until December 25, 2017
A smaller indoor illumination but younger children will enjoy the Disney Crystal Magic decoration in the Shibuya Hikarie Building while mom and dad shop or enjoy a meal.  This year’s Disney theme is Mickey Mouse.

11. Tokyo Dome City  (Suidobashi, Tokyo) – now until February 18, 2018
Combine a fun day of indoor rollerblading, outdoor amusement rides or onsen while viewing the brilliant annual illumination festival at Tokyo Dome. This years’ illuminations theme is sweets so you can enjoy an illuminated 6M high candy house and 7M candy decorated tree.
Time of illumination: November 10 – January 29th, 2017; daily 16:00 – 1:00 (past midnight)

12. Tokyo Midtown (Roppongi, Tokyo) November 15 – December 25, 2017Tokyo Midtown illumination

This is a “must see” light show. Raising the bar on last year’s illumination this year is said to be even more exciting. It should be magnificent.  Great locations to watch from outside are at the base of the Starlight Garden or on the overwalk to the Mid-Town buildings.

13. Tokyo Sky Tree Town (Sumida, Tokyo) – now until  December 25, 2017
The Tokyo Sky Tree will be lit with over 40,000 lights from mid-November to get one in the holiday spirit. This year`s theme is Hikari Garden. From December 10th a projection light show will begin to transform the Sky Tree into the largest Christmas tree in Tokyo. If you have not been to the Sky Tree, this will be a fun time to visit.

14. VenusFort (Odaiba, Minato-ku, Tokyo) – Now until – mid-March 2018
Pretty cool projection mapping taking place at the Venus Fort Shopping Center this winter. This year`s illumination is projection mapping and will definitely thrill the entire family.

15. Yebisu Garden Place (Ebisu, Tokyo) – now until  January 8, 2018
After grabbing a dinner at Shack Shack in Ebisu or Shopping at the new Muji store check out the beautiful illuminations at Yebisu Garden Place. The main feature is the massive Baccarat crystal chandelier surrounded by illuminations.
Time of illumination: Now until  January 8th  2018; Everyday 16:00 to 24:00

Tokyo Area 2016 Illuminations16. Yokohama Landmark Tower (Minato Mirai, Yokohama) – now until December 25, 2017
If you have little ones, who enjoy fantasy and the Peter Rabbit story head down to Yokohama for an evening viewing of a magnificent Christmas tree decorated with Peter Rabbit ornaments.
